The region is home to some of New Zealand’s oldest established vineyards, with vines first planted in Northland in 1819, and is best known for its Bordeaux style wines - mouth-filling Cabernet Sauvignons and complex Chardonnays. Gisborne is New Zealand’s 4th largest grape growing region. Gisborne vineyards concentrate on Chardonnay, with other white varies including Chenin Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Riesling widely planted. Hawke's Bay is New Zealand's second largest wine growing region and one of its oldest. Wineries have been produced in the Bay since the 19th century. Chardonnay is the most widely planted grape variety, but the warm weather is also ideal for some red grape varieties including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Syrah. Wairarapa has a climate similar to Marlborough, with low rainfall, high sunshine hours and cool nights. Their boutique wineries have a big reputation for the quality of their Pinot Noir wines. Marlborough is New Zealand’s largest wine growing region. It has an international reputation for producing the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world. It also makes very good Chardonnay and Riesling and is fast developing a reputation for high quality Pinot Noir. There are approximately ten thousand hectares of grapes growing in Marlborough and one third are planted in Sauvignon Blanc. Nelson is one of the country’s smaller wine regions, with very picturesque vineyards. . Nelson vineyards concentrate mostly on producing Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir. Canterbury, well known for its lamb, is also becoming well known and appreciated for its Riesling and Pinot Noir wines. Central Otago is the world’s southern most wine-producing region and I believe it is New Zealand's most picturesque region. The summers are hot and dry, and the winters crisp and snowy so it is a great place to produce some of New Zealand’s very best Pinot Noir.
